Less is more: this is a mantra one can apply to (almost) anything in life. But is particularly true when it comes to Art. Based on this premise, artgenève opens to the public today.
The Swiss art fair, now at its 6th edition, aims to establish an artistic platform in the Suisse Romande, and it considers itself at the very forefront of modern and contemporary art. The “boutique” caters to the requirements of the Lake Geneva region’s many collectors and art-lovers.
Already in 2014, fair’s director Thomas Hug claimed that artgenève “reached maturity” — at least as far as size was concerned. The advantages of a small fair are obvious: this year, 85 galleries from 16 countries will enjoy a 17’000 sqm space, which means they can indulge in larger booths, without clumping all the works in an overwhelming ensemble. The second, and perhaps most important, factor is quality control, made easier by the relatively modest number of participants.
Counting on “regulars” such as Gagosian Gallery and Blain|Southern, the fair has this year a lot to offer. I was really impressed by the museum-quality works on display.
Due to its contained size, it is possible to visit the fair in one day. There are a number of outstanding presentations, 11 of which are highlighted for you below.
